087 - Rheumatology Practice 101: Starting Out in Practice for The Graduating Fellow

Session Overview:
The purpose of this session will be to discuss for the graduating rheumatology fellow the various career paths including academic and private practice. The pros and cons of each will be discussed, including the advantages and disadvantages of solo, small group or large private practice. For those wishing to start their own practice, the processes involved in setting up a private practice will be reviewed.

Upon completion of this session, participants should be able to:

  • appraise contracts with managed care companies and negotiating opportunities
  • evaluate how to buy in to an existing practice, hire a new associate, and meet the needs of a retiring partner
  • discuss the pros and cons of adding ancillary services (e.g., infusion center, densitometry service, etc.), an office manager or practice administrator
